Commonly used by military officers in the field, traveling merchants and businessmen, this portable writing desk was hand-crafted in England in the first half of the 19th century, in Regency era taste, featuring a brass hinged lift-top opening to reveal an inset merlot velvet writing surface, each side lifting to reveal open storage, having divided compartments fitted with removable concave shaped wooden pen tray and two later glass inkwells. The rectangular mahogany case fitted with two inset folding brass handles, one accesses a concealed full length drawer where the owner would have hidden valuables.
