A wonderful and most decorative French 19th century Charles X st. Ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble vanity mirror. This interesting table top mirror is raised on a circular Rouge Griotte base with a mottled upper edge. Above the marble base is a scene of an Ormolu winged cherub riding on the back of a porpoise while holding the dorsal fin. The porpoise is diving down into the tentacles of an octopus that is on top of a large seashell. The tail of the majestic porpoise serves as the support to the circular mirror above. The beveled mirror is framed by a beautifully decorated Ormolu frame with beaded inner, outer, and central bands. Between the central and inner beaded bands is a Coeur-de-Rai band, while the outer band displays a foliate and arched pattern.
