France – Mid 19th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 77 x 47 x 37 cm
Description:
Exceptional side table from the period around 1840, rarely found in this fineness.
In the center of a three-legged substructure rises a shaft designed as a corkscrew column. The wood nestles in a spiral around an iron rod encased in brass.
Carving and turning work of this quality requires the highest level of craftsmanship.
The table top is absolutely unique. Framed by acanthus vines, we see a couple in the forest. She is sitting on a stone with a jug in her hand, he is standing with his arm raised and a shotgun slung over his shoulder.
Some of the perfectly preserved and razor-sharp engravings can only be seen with a magnifying glass. Look at the highly magnified detailed photo of the lady, for example, at the design of the blouse, the fineness of the eyebrow or the drapery of the scarf.
Pieces of furniture like this never cease to amaze me with the perfection of the cabinetmakers of the time…
