It features a double flying butterfly motif on the front and was expertly embroidered in Peking chain knots, satin and couching stitches using a wide range of colorful silk thread. A complementary cutout of a small embroidery was included in the framing to balance the overall design.

The finely woven brocade was a fabric designated for the use of the imperial court as it features patterns of five-clawed dragon, reserved exclusively for the emperor. It was likely woven in one of an imperial studios in Southern China where several weaving centers were located. The intricate textile is of a sober color pallet and features chains of hexagon shape in which dragons of alternative large and small sizes were centered. In the ones with smaller dragon, four auspicious symbols were used as surround, including the coins and svatikas. The impressive designs were complex with details, but somehow achieved a visual harmony. A fine example.

Extensive techniques such as embroidery, trapunto, patching, quilting, plaques were employed to create this three dimensional wearable art with lively characters.
The origin of “Tiger-head” hat can be traced back to Tang dynasty based on actual archeological finding. The tradition evidently lasted through the Song and Ming dynasties despite of lack of abundant literature and archeological records. Toward the end of Qing dynasty, it became very popular across the society, perhaps due to the instability and the wish to increase the survival rate of male infants. As tiger, the king of all beasts, is one of the most beloved animal totems in Chinese folklore for its vitality and prowess. The tiger spirit is audacious and evil-smashing. Therefore the hat was believed to bestow such essence and power to the child and guarantee him a strong growth physically and mentally.
The current hat, based on the construction and workmanship, was from central-northern part of China. It was lovely presented in a plexiglass shadow box with a giltwood frame and a red background. It is positioned frontally on the rack as shown in photo 2. It can be displayed on the wall or simply as a desk top piece, equally beautiful.

This example, entailed with many stitch techniques including, satin, couching, extensive and very fine Peking knots and forbidden knots, depicts two noble ladies in a garden setting. In front of a pavilion, one lady is kneeing to make wishes in front of an incent burner set above a Stand, while the other lady stands behind, holding a fan on her back and attentively looking on. The garden is anchored with the pavilion in its center, a bridge in front and clusters of landscape Taihu rocks priced in Chinese garden design, among trees and plants. On the dark indigo background, the tour-de-force light colored silk thread embroidery presents itself almost as a stylized low relief painting. A wide border of splendid peonies among vining flowers surround the central panel and complete the piece. The pictorial design of beauties in garden is a Classic motif in Chinese art. Here, the details were furthered to story-telling. One of the four Classic Chinese beauties, DiaoChan, was famously associated with making wishes in front of incense under a full moon. The lovely piece is presented in a museum quality silver frame with linen mat. Gallery label remains on the back.

Tailored in light auberge silk with thick padding, the attire was reserved for cold winter weather, which was common in Northern China. The surface is masterfully adorned with embroidery of silver threads. Although the color pallet was nearly minimalistic compared to many other colorful embroidery work at the time, the contrast of silver on auberge background is visually stunning and exudes a noble air of elegance. Floral and foliage motifs are showcased in neat arrangement across the coat and ocean waves and coral rocks cover the entire lower part, sleeve bands and the outer portion of the neck warmer. Many different stitches were employed, including satin stitch, chain stitch, couching as well as forbidden knots found on the neck warmer, to demonstrate the delicate and meticulous workmanship. Interestingly. the design of the jacket bears resemblance to the Qing dynasty court robe with the ocean waves on the bottom, but there are no symbolic motifs such as phoenix indicative of the owner’s status. This suggests that the lady may still be of royal lineage but the coat was for informal occasion.
It is rather unusual to have two pieces kept together in such good condition. They were professionally presented in matching shadow boxes with a suede like lining in salmon color, which beautifully complement the textile art. The respective measurements are 20.5″ H x 40″ W x 4.5″ D and 35″ H x 40″ W x 4.5″ D and they were designed to be displayed vertically as shown.

The impressive work depicts two well beloved Chinese deities of longevity: Magu and Shouxing.
Magu (Hemp Maiden) is a legendary Taoist deity associated with the elixir of life, and a symbolic protector of women in Chinese mythology. She is always depicted as a beautiful young woman with a smiling face in flowing robe with elaborate hairdo adorned with jewelries. Often she holds a large gift basket that is filled plants and fruits symbolizing longevity such as peaches, lingzhi mushroom and grains. The motif is very popular in Chinese culture and called ‘Magu’s Birthday Greeting” The other deity is Shouxing (The Star of Longevity, also known as The Old Man of the South Pole). He is the Taoist deification of Canopus, the brightest star of the constellation Carina. Always depicted as a healthy old man donning a long white beard, he holds a staff sometimes with Lingzhi other times with a gourd that contains elixir, and is accompanied by a deer. The two deities often come together in Chinese art as auspicious symbol of longevity.
The silk embroidery work was very finely done with tight needle work and various styles of stitches. The painstaking details throughout the piece are visually stunning. The color palette was intentionally restricted to red, black, grey and white on a vermillion background, to emphasize the auspicious nature of the symbolism.
