This scholar rock features a relatively red and porous surface. Its elegant mushroom cloud form resembles red coral in the ocean. The visual poetry of this piece is punctuated with many natural grottoes formed by millennium of aqua element in the lake. It invokes a sense of wonder and imagination.
The naturally weathered stones from Lake Tai were collected and priced by Chinese scholars since Tang dynasty when using them in garden became vogue. Later on smaller pieces were displayed in the study on complimentary custom stand as a meditation on nature and philosophy. The novelty of the shape and unusual cavities that were weathered naturally through ages were highly appreciated as an inspiration for containing nature in imagination.
The stone itself measure 28.5 inches, with stand the overall height is 34 inches.

Finely carved on surface with a sitting Buddha on lotus throne holding his hands in Vitarka mudra, which signifies the transmission of his teachings. Surrounding him around the center frame is a packed group of Bodhisattva and deities at the attendance to his sermon. The dense carving is done with superb craftsmanship and much attention was paid to the details. The wood is likely Hongmu a rosewood family that resembles Huanghuali but with a distinguished smell (also known in southern China as Hong Suanzhi, the sour wood), a dark hard wood, choice of the material for many highly carved scholar objects for the literati.

The inkstone appears to be slate stone and was likely a She type (SheYan), one of the four famous inkstones in China that comes from She County (Anhui Province) and Wuyuan County (Jiangxi Province). It features a slight scalloping edge with elaborate surface carving that depicts the Sanxings (three beloved gods): Fu, God of Fortune (top right), Lu, God of Prosperity (top center holding a Ruyi staff) and Shou, God of Longevity (center on the lid who is holding a magical peach and a staff with a gourd with a deer at the back) . A towering evergreen pine was placed on the left with scrolling clouds and bats (the sound of bat in Chinese is Fu, the fortune). A famous Chinese couplet flanks the lid that reads “Fortune is like the East Sea without bound; Longevity is like the Southern Mountain that never age”. On the back of the inkstone, there is a mark in an archaic calligraphy “WenBaoZhai” (Literature Treasture Studio), which was the maker of this piece.
Inkstones had a history of thousands of years in Chinese culture and it was deemed as one of the four precious items for a scholar’s study. Many were collected as artefact throughout history and pass down as family heirlooms.

The dark stone, with the pronounced white veins and wrinkled surface texture, appears to be of the Lingbi type at the first glance, one of the four famous ancient stones from China, yet upon closer inspection, the stone is identified to be a similar type type called Bo Shan Wen Stone, an ancient stone type collected from Bo Mountain, Zibo City in Shangdong Province. Formed in nature, selected by human, this stone features an extraordinary vertical mushroom form with a sky window on the top part. The extraordinarily weathered surface showcases the characteristic typical in Wen stone, such as tight and ubiquitous furrows and folds with crisscrossing striated white geometrical veins. Bo Shan Wen stones were desired by the collectors since the ancient time because the source is located in Lu Kingdom, the homeland of Confucius. They are among a few documented historical stones. In 1980s, the interest in the stone was revived. It is possible that this stone was collected around and after that time.
Scholar stones are priced by the collectors for their four qualities: shou (thinness), zhou (wrinkles), lou (hollowness), and tou (transparency). The history of collecting and appreciating interesting stones among the literati in China began as early as the 13th century in Yuan Dynasty, and it continued to this day. These stones were highly priced for their form and shape, which were considered containing the spirit of nature. They were displayed in the scholar’s studio for meditation.

The black Andulusite body contrasts dramatically with the radiating white petals of rhombohedral crystal matrix forms, resembling a fully opened chrysanthemum flower. Highly collectible as gemstone, it was cherished as scholar stone in Chinese culture and graced the collector’s study. The stones were mostly found and collected in Southern part of China, with the black type likely from Hubei Provence, Enshi County. This particular stone on offer is in the form of a vertical slab with the white crystalline formation going through to the opposite sides, forming a near mirrored image. This rare quality also makes the stone displayable from both sides. The carved wood stand has stylized leaf-shaped feet, a reference to the chrysanthemum image on the stone.
For two very similar stones, see reference book Spirit Stone by Kemin Hu and Thomas S. Elias, page 136-137.
