The scene is topped by a winged dial engraved with a hunting scene. A radiant masked sun rising from the clouds dominates the whole.

This clock has an ingenious mechanism with two melodies striking the quarter-hour, half-hour and hour.

This impressive clock has been created after a design by the Londonian woodcarver Thomas Johnson, published first in 1758 then in 1761 in One Hundred and Fifty New Designs (plate 13). Thomas Johnson (1714-1778) was one of the main proponents of the French-inspired Rococo taste in English decorative arts during the 1750s, along with Matthias Lock and Thomas Chippendale.

Provenance : Charles Scarlett Jr., Whitehall, Annapolis, USA
Whitehall was built by Horatio Sharpe, the last governor of the colony of Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay east of Annapolis starting in 1763-1769. He went to London on family business in 1773 and was prevented from returning by the Revolution. The house was sold to Sharpe’s former secretary John Ridout and remained in the Ridout family until 1895. It was acquired by the Baltimore businessman Charles Scarlett Jr. in 1946, who completely restored the property and furnished the interiors. The estate is now managed by a foundation with the Mission of preserving the house and supporting educational and conservation initiatives.

French, c.1825
Height 36cm, width 18.5m, depth 10.5cm

Set within a beautiful porcelain case, parcel gilt, and florally decorated against a black ground, this fine mantel clock, with a central circular dial surrounded by an ormolu foliage wreath, was made in the Charles X period by the leading maker, Jacob Petit. The base which it is raised upon, below a rich ormolu mounted frieze, is decorated in line with the top, combining Neoclassical elements with a delightful Rococo floral aspect. It is marked to the base, ‘J. P.’
Jacob Petit, born Jacob Mordecai, was a well-known and celebrated French manufacturer of porcelain in the 19th Century.

After studying drawing in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros, a follower of Jacques-Louis David, Petit joined the famous Sevres Manufactory in 1822, where he painted porcelain wares. After travelling and studying throughout Europe , upon his return to France in 1830-31 he published a complete collection of interior decorations. Together with his brother, Petit bought a porcelain factory in Fontainebleau and, later, a workshop in Paris, where his work became distinctive for their ornamental character, delicate, pastel colours and their reinterpretation of the neo-Rococo of the early 19th Century.

A monumental clock of very fine quality and with totally original fire gilded ormolu. The clock represents Ceres, the Roman goddess of corn and harvests. She was the daughter of Saturn and Vesta and had a daughter by Jupiter called Prosperine. From this came the story of the “Rape of Prosperine” and the search by Ceres for her daughter all-over Sicily. On the clock Ceres is represented by the standing figure to the left of the clock. On her head she has a garland of corn and in her left hand she carries the seed head of a poppy and some ears of corn. The clock stands on bracket feet with floral decoration. The rectangular base has a scene in deep relief of Ceres and her votaries drawn in a chariot behind two bulls (sacred to her). She is carrying a sheaf of corn and sowing seed with the other hand. A votary sits beside her with a lighted torch (representing the search for Prosperine). A man leads the bulls and may represent Triptolemus to whom she showed the secrets of farming and who in turn enlightened the world. Finely decorated mouldings of Amthemion and stiff leaf separate the base and the drum case. A fine applied ormolu mount below the dial is of two dancing maidens holding a torch between them. The gilt bronze dial is surrounded by a bezel of flowering cornucopia and the hands are of blued steel. The movement is of 8 day duration, regulated by a silk suspended pendulum and strikes the hours and halves on a cast bell by means of count wheel strike.

This verson dating from circa 1820-1830 is by JB Marchand a re-knowned bronzier and it differs from the more common Claud Michalon version. The Michalon clock has Cupid and Psyche entwined over the clock while this one has the two lovers talking across the clock. Marchand has used a fine combination of rouge marble and fire gilded ormolu with the patinated bronze figure to great efect. The marble is in excellent condition and of a lovely colour. Both the finishes to the ormolu and patinated bronze are original. The clock face of gilt bronze with gilt bronze hands is flanked by two flaming torches of ormolu. The base has an applied ormolu mount of Cupids arrow passing through a wreath and ribbon. The clock stands on a further ormolu base with stiff leaf and dart decoration and has fine ormolu winged paw feet. The movement is of 8 day duration and regulated by a silk suspended pendulum, striking the hours and halves on a fine cast bell by means of the count wheel. The dial is signed J B Marchand 57 Rue Richelieu. Tardy has him working at this address until 1850 but the family had been working in Paris since the early 18th century.
