The sides are decorated with punch bead bands, as well as stylized flower heads and foliate spears. This example has wirework “S” scroll handles. The bowl of the Taster displays a very crisp set of marks and is decorated with a trailing vine and bunch of grapes, which is a most unusual feature. The maker’s mark is shown on page 121 of Jackson’s, “Silver & Gold Marks.”

Very few wine tasters were made by English Silversmiths because wine was not a national product and the majority are French. There were a small number produced in England from 1645 and examples from Charles II reign are rare.

As you will see from the images, the spoon is modelled in the Trefid style and the back of the bowl displays finely detailed scroll lace work entwined with beaded bands, around a raised reeded rat tail. The back of the stem displays a good set of hallmarks. The front of the stem also displays very beautiful raised lacework including scroll work and beading, slightly different to the designs usually seen. The top of the stem is also engraved with a set of marriage initials amongst the lacework. The spoon is in quite excellent condition, has a good colour, a fine gauge stem and good bowl. Lawrence Coles was apprentice to John Smith and there is no doubt, from his freedom in 1667 onwards, that he was a major trade supplier, with workshops in Foster Lane.
