An organic modern coffee table in the manner of Carl Aubock. A 1960s table featuring a pine slab with exposed bark, floating over a trio of iron legs with a great splay. Heavy and vintage. San Diego California Provenance.

Condition:

Unlevel surface. Shellac finish appears to be not original. Some missing bark commensurate with age and use. Some stable older stress cracks to the bark.

Tessellated Bone & Wood Waterfall Coffee Table, 1960s

This is a piece from my personal collection – one which I have lived with and loved for over a decade (but I simply have too many coffee tables and can’t keep them all). I purchased it from a high-end antiques dealer in NYC. He told me it was a custom, handmade order from a wonderful collector. He believed it was made in the 50s or 60s. No signature is present.

The bone and wood tiles, which have been applied to a wooden inner structure, are presented in a way that the design appears three dimensional. Like a coffered ceiling in architecture, the design adds definition and interest to an otherwise flat surface.

This table is hearty and durable. When you feel it, it’s easy to see that the construction was made to last.
