Chinese, circa 1920’s (possibly earlier)
Glamorous, exotic, and distinctive – here are 2 antique Chinese cocktail Shaker for a crowd! This high-quality piece (hand-engraved and well-marked) was created for elegant entertaining on a grand scale.
The Kut Hing company (from the city of Swatow – now called Shantou) was arguably the most prominent Swatow pewterware maker of the late 19th/early 20th century. An excellent example of Swatow pewter style, this piece showcases traditional highly-crafted dragon artwork.
“Swatow” literally translates to “mountain head;” and the majority of the pewter products made in this region were renown for their intricate decoration. The most popular and collectible items feature dragons and dragon themes.
This Shaker depicts a beautiful, hand-engraved dragon design that winds around most of the cannister. It consists of three pieces: cannister, strainer top and cup. The metal on the bottom is double-thickness. This is a large, substantial piece. The inside of the cup bears the company mark, and the bottom of the cannister is stamped with traditional Kut Hing markings over Chinese characters.
