A good antique Chinese Qing dynasty famille rose porcelain candleholder, circa 1860.
This very attractive antique Chinese porcelain elephant is hand-painted in the Canton famille rose palette, and profusely gilded throughout. The elephant having a Gu-form candleholder, decorated with a famille rose design and having a gilded rim, below is a caparison (an ornamental covering over a saddle) also decorated in the famille rose palette. The elephant is signed to the underside with a hand-painted two character mark. There are other such elephants listed on 1stdibs for $4,000+, this elephant is in excellent condition, no damage or restoration.
Provenance; from a large Chinese collection of porcelain, San Francisco. The elephant was acquired at Sotheby’s auction in 1998 for $2400.
