The prestigious Savonnerie rugs woven at Aubusson have always been synonymous of antique French textile art. These find their best expression in the age of Napoleon, the First Empire, where he organized a system of supervision and unification of the arts. The design and palette of First Empire Savonneries were almost identical also in the Restauration period – also known as Charles X. In this fragmentary rug we see the typical Empire botanical pattern arranged in a form of a trellis on a maroon background.
