Charles II Antique Stumpwork Embroidery Picture of Noah’s Ark. The embroidery is very finely worked in silks and chenille threads on a silk ground. Worked in a variety of stitches with areas of raised work. Embellished with pearls and metallic beads. Colours greens, gold, blues, red and brown. A busy pictorial scene depicts Noah and his family, loading his Ark with animals. Noah stands on the right, holding a book under his arm. Other figures are carrying supplies to the Ark. Another figure kneels, praying in the top right corner. Noah’s Ark sits in the top left corner. Many animals line up in pairs to board the ark. Dogs, horses, deer, rabbits, goats, elephants, giraffes, and a variety of birds, amongst others. There is also a house in the background, with trees either side. Professionally re-framed in a modern, old-style gilt frame. Glazed with Tru Vue glass – which has UV protection. Backed with conservation-grade backing board and tape. The dimensions of the visible embroidery are 10ins high, 13ins wide. The overall dimensions of the frame are 22ins high, 24.75ins wide, 1.9ins deep.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Condition:GoodGood. Colours good and strong. Small hole with associated split to the backing to central figure. Small hole to the left of the house. Inconspicuous repair(?) on Noah’s face. Pale stain speck next to deer. Some stitch losses to Noah’s hat.
