Fabulous pair of high back burnt bamboo armchairs with gracefully shaped horseshoe frames, in the Brighton Pavilion style. These tall beautifully handcrafted Chinese Chippendale chairs feature a tortoiseshell finish, caned-bottom seats, and intricate bamboo open fretwork. Seat without a loose cushion is 19″ high. (Cushions not included.)
Chinese design and bamboo furniture became highly fashionable in the Western world after the completion of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton for future King George IV in 1801. George had a love of fine and decorative arts and a fascination with the Chinese style. He selected Chinese export furniture and objects along with hand-painted Chinese wallpapers for his seaside home. Chairs similar to those listed here were part of the exotic furnishings at the former royal residence and are still found in the grand hallways of Brighton Pavilion today.
