Vintage Design
This stunning elm wood altar table is a wonderful example of those used in temples or high class homes throughout Chinese society.
It comes from Shanxi province, northern China, circa 1860 and would have been used as a surface for offerings to ancestors or to show off favourite prized ornaments such as jade or bronzes.
Altar tables were usually large and imposing in size as is this one, with an extended top surface ending in raised ‘flanges’ and would generally be placed centrally against the rear wall of the main reception room of the home,
The black lacquer finish on this piece is original though worn in places which is inevitable given its age.
This beautiful table would make a striking console for a reception area or large hallway, with its classic ‘cloud head’ carved design at the top of the legs both to the front and back, as well as double ‘ruyi’ symbols between each set of leg post.
