Simply stunning, ornate (inside and out), George III Oriental lacquer cabinet by Baker Furniture. It features two panelled black lacquer doors and sides elaborately decorated in a raised gilt and ochre landscape design. It has finely cast brass mounts and hinges finished in dark antique bronze. When opened, it exposes a black lacquer interior beautifully hand-painted in a similar manner and fitted with one shallow long drawer and above it a shelf or surface that pulls out to provide a bar surface or desk (although given the height it appears it was intended to be used as a bar). The back wall of the interior is mirrored and has two adjustable glass shelves. The interior is also lit. The chest rests on a Chinese Chippendale square chamfered legs that feature pierced fretwork angle brackets where the legs meet the cabinet. A version of this cabinet is still available today (at a cost of approximately $50,000) but this is one of the early releases (early 1980’s). The new version of this cabinet has a different interior (not nearly as cool as the bar cabinet style seen here). It is part of Baker’s Stately Homes Collector’s Edition. This particular piece is fashioned after a significant English antique circa 1760. In excellent condition given the age of the piece. One rear leg was loose so we sent it out for restoration. It is back, available for immediate shipment and oh so lovely.
